Today I saw another Canadian mention a phenomenon I recall quite clearly that I've been meaning to investigate for a long time - Cigarettes having a unique and pleasant smell when first being lit.
Do you remember when adults would smoke in the car as a kid (I seem to only recall this ever happening in cars) when they first lit the cigarette it had a strange but pleasant smell for the first little bit that quickly turned into normal shitty cigarette smell.
I can't at all smell this smell as an adult though, if someone lights a cigarette it just smells like yucky cigarette immediately.
I'm also not sure if this phenomenon is unique to Canadian cigarettes.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I asked a few IRL friends already and they all remember it too.
No I always hated it when my father kit a cigarette in the car

i asked some american friends and they said the same, canadian cigarettes are way different than american, but perhaps there are similar ones elsewhere in the world i know some smokers who find the smell of cigarettes pleasant, i smoked for many years and didn't like the smell then and still don't
but this smell is very specific, and i only remember smelling it as a kid, and as mentioned it would quickly dissipate and just smell like shitty cigarette smoke
Ethan Green
I always hated the smell since I was a kid. My father was a smoker and died a couple years ago of esophagus cancer.

No one will believe, but as a kid I could breathe underwater
Jose Fisher
never thought about it but I feel like it's the same way now too lighting up and the first puff have that distinct very slightly sweet earthy smell I guess it has to do with the amount of smoke that builds up into the air after smoking for some time I get kind of the same smell when I quickly pass by someone smoking on the street I'm a smoker myself but this only applies to other people smoking in my vicinity

Stale smoke smells bad. Insulated areas trap smoke. Cars are tight spaces where the density can build up easily. Does smoke currently smell bad to you outside of cars as well? Is there anything else that leads you to believe it is a uniquely Canadian phenomenon? I don't see the connection. The one you drew seems quite tangential.

I used to hold my breath underwater for as long as possible. It felt meditative in a way. Is something like that what you mean?
Jack Hall
i smoked for 4 years when I was 18 but I remember being a child and liking the smell way before I ever started smoking
Mason Ortiz
I could breathe underwater Not hold my breathe, breath
Blake Allen
yes, cigarette smoke always smells bad to me regardless, this had to be something to do with the composition of canadian cigarettes i think
this pleasant smell would only exist for 30 seconds max when the cigarette is first lit >Is there anything else that leads you to believe it is a uniquely Canadian phenomenon? yes, our cigarettes are pretty unique to canada, if you've ever smoked or smelled cigarettes from other countries they are much different

t. 30yo who now smokes

It’s probably that the first puffs are ‘pure’ burning tobacco leaf, while as you get further down the dart it starts sort of ‘filtering’ itself with itself, ie the last half of the cigarette would be the tobacco leaf plus the tar etc from the first half
This is true of Dude Weed too, in that the inner part of a joint is coated in a bunch of tars and resins from the first half that make you slightly more high in the second half than smoking the first half
Jonathan Peterson
so did you seemingly lose the ability to smell it when you got older?
Oliver Garcia
i'm talking about something you could smell for only a few seconds, i don't think it could be caused by what you're describing
Juan Gutierrez
theres no significant difference between the smell of cigarette smoke regardless of how much has been smoked nigga
Juan Brown
I believe I heard that they add a certain compound to the tip of the cigarettes to allow them to light quicker. I can't imagine that's uniquely Canadian though. Probably like that it the states. I don't smoke though, and barely have.
Benjamin Howard
I always loved the smell of cigarettes, one of the reasons i started smoking in the first place
Jayden Thompson
weed smells like fucking shit, way worse than cigs, and the people that smoke it are always insufferable
