For me, it was video games. You had to know what button did what and not every game was translated to dutch. I'd say I knew English by ~15 but only started seeing English language media when I was 12. It was easy though because English is so similar to dutch.

How did you learn to speak English? Chances are no one taught you before you started school. Kid's brains are extremely good at picking up the language or languages that surround them. They have to, or else they are pretty fucked.

I learned English through GTA San Andreas Multi-player. Especially through those English-based role-playing servers.
The problem is that not only did I learn English from there, but also got distracted by American influences.

This is the sign that you're from an irrelevant country. I've been playing games since the age of 4 and never encountered other languages than Russian until the age of 15, by which time I had already known english
