Hair can be long on top, but less than 3 cm on sides so gasmask fits properly. Gasmask is also reason why you cant have beard

why wouldn't they? I served in the army for a while here and it wasn't a requirement either, you just had to be shaved clean (or keep a well groomed beard)

I think short hair is to prevent lice, and no beard due to fitting gas masks
but since gas attacks are really unlikely nowadays and lice are easily prevented by decent hygiene, I guess that's why it's not a requirement here anymore, so you just have to look decent as a soldier

You have to shave it when you start the conscription but it gets more lenient after the basic training

The basic requirement was cutting your hair short enough that it doesn't cover your ears and eyes. Forcing someone to shave themselves bald was a form of hazing in my unit.

Alanko means low place in Finnish (as in not high place in nature). Dude honestly looks like a normal western Finn.
