The book is lame. People who got infected and survived form a new society. They take medication to lessen the symptoms. There is no cure. He's the only human left. He's feared by the new society because he killed tons of Vampires both dead and alive and is captured and prepared for execution but he commits suicide. Hence the title I am Legend. He becomes a monster to the new society.
