It's true, I say this as a black guy who listens almost exclusively to heavy metal. Before discovering it in college I didn't think I was into music. So many years......wasted.

They're closely related and it's hard to explain without listening. Death metal is more focused on musical "skill" and complexity, it usually has more classical influences with arpeggios, melodic or fast solos.
Black metal is more focused on sounding doomy, satanic, and sad. It tries to be more simple and repetitive. There is often a "lo-fi" quality of the audio. You might hear noise in the recording, the instruments might be hard to hear and the voice muffled.
These are just generalizations, it's not 100% accurate. There are different types of death metal and they have different sounds. Another difference is more meta, the lyrical themes, the costumes, their philosophy.
