Korea has deservedly taken the lead in areas where Japan obstinately refuses to innovate (or even just make the bare minimum effort needed to maintain their previous accomplishments). Japan is a country of the past, Korea is actively looking towards the future. (Except their birth rates I guess, lmao)

Wow Kpop and Squid Game, so influential! No but really the answer is that S Korea is a vassel state of the USA and basically has ended up being a charicature of western capitalism, making S Korean "culture" relatable to western NPCs, and of course you are shilled by the likes of Netflix and so on, because your cultural export to the west ends up with US soft power being imported back into your lands.
All that and you are STILL less relevant than Japan and basically just an inferior version. Nintendo alone is probably bigger overall than all Kpoop exports combined.

I dont like kpop, probably listen to more japanese but I can understand why it's popular. Hip hop is popular right now. Koreans incorporate it better ie not being ghetto. When Japanese add elements of it, it's just them larping urban culture from the 90s. It is just that japanese do not fully understand the world except through surface-level and outdated stereotypes.
