One of those might eventually be born with a mutation that makes its lungs way bigger, like Michael Phelps has a lung mutation, so this animal can breathe under water for waaay longer and probably swim way better because his lungs stores more air. Now this little fucker dominates the shit out of his little environment. He can dive deeper to reach a food source that was previously untapped by his colleagues, he can escape land predators and huge fucking birds for way longer, he has the best possible advantage, it's not even fair.
So all the females are going to favor this little cunt, because they want their offspring to have the best possible advantage. So he fucks a lot, and he has a lot of kids. Because of that the chances that one of his kids carries this mutation is way bigger.
Now repeat that, two individuals with the mutation fuck, way bigger chance, mutation might be even more developed. Lungs keep getting bigger. We're now at the point where the lungs are so big that even the newborn have them. Keep in mind they are born developed enough to instantly swim up and fill their lungs.
