Gandalf is sent to Middle Earth to help defeat Sauron

>Gandalf is sent to Middle Earth to help defeat Sauron
>Knows about the One Ring and how all of Sauron's power is tied up in it
>Destroying it is the only way to destroy Sauron for good
>Has 2000 years to do research on the One Ring and look for clues of where it might have been lost
>Never even attempts to search for it
>Bilbo finds it
>Doesn't even cross Gandalf's mind that the ring Bilbo found, which has all the characteristics of the One Ring, might in fact be the One Ring
>Takes him decades to suspect it might be it
>Decides to finally do some research to see if it's the One Ring, leaving extremely dangerous object unprotected in the Shire all while he knows Sauron is getting powerful again and will certainly be looking for it
Why is Gandalf such a retard?

dude weed lmao

too much smoking and merrymaking

His love of the halflings leaf has clearly slowed his mind

Fun fact: Gandalf never intended to own a sword.
He never considered swordsmanship and wether or not a sword is useful. He just found his super legendary sword by happenstance in the Hobbit and kept it.

>>Knows about the One Ring and how all of Sauron's power is tied up in it

Did he? I never read the books, but from the movies it always seemed like he didn't know what the One Ring was until he researched it after Bilbo's ring raised suspicion.

Only faggots and nerds are "quick to action". Chilled sages have to take their time to get real things done.

His bias makes him forget anything negative about hobbits with exception of pippin.

>Gandalf is sent to Middle Earth to help defeat Sauron
He isn't.
>Knows about the One Ring and how all of Sauron's power is tied up in it
He doesn't.
>Destroying it is the only way to destroy Sauron for good
It isn't. Ainur are truly immortal.
>Has 2000 years to do research on the One Ring and look for clues of where it might have been lost
He didn't research anything, it was Sarumans job.
>Never even attempts to search for it
Because Saruman convinced everyone that it's lost to the sea.
>Doesn't even cross Gandalf's mind that the ring Bilbo found, which has all the characteristics of the One Ring, might in fact be the One Ring
He didn't know anything about "characteristics of the One Ring".
>Takes him decades to suspect it might be it
As it should.
>Decides to finally do some research to see if it's the One Ring, leaving extremely dangerous object unprotected in the Shire all while he knows Sauron is getting powerful again and will certainly be looking for it
Shire is the safest place in Middle Earth for the ring.
Read the books, faggot.

Simple - there's fuckton of magic rings around.
>takes him decades
Also simple - you look for THE ring of power, irresistible corrupting force of the world. Would it ever cross your mind this goober with bare feet in his bumfuck village is able to hold on to it for a century with NO visible damage to himsrlf whatsoever?

Loregoblin raping the OP again. Story as old as world itself.

My uni had this guy that stalked our campus dressed exactly like Gandalf. Instead of a staff he had a cane (like the kind you can buy at walmart), and he would throw mahjong tiles at students in the courtyard. Eventually he got arrested, sent to jail, and was never seen again.
There was an unconfirmed rumor going around he was seen at a different uni but was wearing all white.

>OP is unconscious and cannot respond

>>Gandalf is sent to Middle Earth to help defeat Sauron
no`the rest of your retardation follows from there, wikifag.

Saruman liked Shire pipe leafs too. He visited the Shire at some point and while there he became curious as to why Gandalf liked this stuff. Saruman tried some out and really liked it. But because he criticized Gandalf so much over it he became too embarrassed if that ever came out.

I mean he literally has an entire storehouse full of it that Merry & Pippin stumble across.

The only real plot hole is when gandalf spends 17 years thinking he *might* have a Great Ring but never bothers to ask Saruman about it directly despite ostensibly still trusting him. Even Tolkien said that was kind of a fuckup iirc

OH NONONONONONO OP ARE YOU OK?
>It isn't. Ainur are truly immortal
Where did he go after the ring was destroyed then? Or your best guess.

>He isn't.
Wrong. The five Istari or Wizards are sent to Middle Earth counteract Sauron. It's literally what the books say so I don't know what to tell you.
>He doesn't.
How would he not know? You would think the Valar would tell him before he arrived and even if they didn't all the elves knew about it and Gandalf knew the elves. You would think he would ask them for information on it.
>It isn't. Ainur are truly immortal
It wasn't said "kill" Sauron, it was said to "destroy" Sauron. Destroying the ring means Sauron will never be powerful enough again to influence or do anything to Middle Earth which is effectively destroying him.
>He didn't research anything, it was Sarumans job.
Then he's a retard. Even though he trusted Saurman to do the bulk of the research he should have at least looked over the cliffnotes version of the history if Sauron's ring. The war of the rings was the last major conflict in Middle Earth involving Sauron.
>Because Saruman convinced everyone that it's lost to the sea.
And Gandalf should have still been looking out for magic rings on the slim chance that Saurman got it wrong.
>He didn't know anything about "characteristics of the One Ring".
Fair enough. But ties into the previous point of Gandalf being a retard. He should have had bare minimal knowledge of what the ring is and what it can do by the time Bilbo finds it.
>As it should.
Because Gandalf is a retard.
>Shire is the safest place in Middle Earth for the ring.
How? It's completely unprotected. Maybe if Sauron wasn't returning to power it would be safe to leave it in the Shire as hobbits are resistant to it's influence, but by the time Gandalf suspects it's the One Ring he knows Sauron is already on the rise again. He should have immediately had hobbits take it over to Rivendell as that is a much safer place since Sauron was unable to beat the elves. By the time he thinks they should move it to Rivendell the Nazgul are already looking for it putting the Shire at risk
