But this one is talked about here constantly. More than any other Kubrick film but not really due to its own merits but because of the things they want to project onto this movie.

I think you're the first person I see mention that. I always call it a post-Hallmark Christmas romcom. The movie is like if you took the characters of a Christmas Hallmark movie and made a 10 years later sequel.

Forgot to mention, the cult stuff is superficial, it's eyecandy like the religious imagery in evangelion. It serves the movie to reinforce all the insecurities he has with his wife. The movie is about a disfunctionnal couple with both partners on the verge of adultery.

It is because Kubrick made movies about aspects of humans life that fascinated him (and sometimes he made what in his opinion were simplistic stories with no deep message like The Shining) and he was interested in monogamy among humans but he added a mystery plot too to make it more interesting.
