While many movies do paint them as generic evil dudes, many of them back then were indeed like movies portrait them, when I went to Alsace the Grandmother of my cousins said that back then it was usual for them to grab babies from women and toss the baby to each other like it was a ball while the mother chased after them and one of them would either intentionally let the baby fall or would throw him into a wall or something.
In the soviet side things were way worse, German soldiers themselves told their families that whatever was alive would get killed, man, women, children or animals.
People that were in both fronts said that the Europe front was like a vacation in comparison to the Soviet front both sides were simply insane and had no self preservation nor morals.
