RDJ only played Tony Stark in the first movie, the rest of the time he just did his usual shtick which is why Ironman 2 and 3 sucked and he got less lines and screentime as the franchise progressed.
The trouble for Disney is that he was so deeply rooted in that it was impossible to X him without blowing everything up, he needed an organic death. The idea judging from the comics was to replace him with Captain Female as "the knight" but then the comics didn't sell and bREE blew up her career. Yet they wrote him out anyway.
Tom Cruise on the other hand seems exactly what Disney would want in ironman, can act with his face, do stunts, and do heavy characterization. He's familiar with sci fi tropes (hell he invented some of them), but above all he does GREAT press and that's half the job.

I thought he got it pretty close in Ironman 1. That kind of bored genius in crisis thing who has the ability to make someone a superhero and so makes himself a superhero because who else and then gets in trouble when he finds an opponent he doesn't easily outmatch and has to rely on what actually makes him special (his engineering talent) to win.
But then in Ironman 2 and onwards he was mostly just CGI RDJ. Ironman 3 was the one that really annoyed me, on top of the fact the kid was clearly there to be molested, the great Tony Stark who built the Mark 1 in a cave from a bunch of scraps is making flyspray flamethrowers in a toolshed with access to a hardware store.
