Most of the work is done by context. Excessive emoting actually spoils the effect, breaking the viewer's immersion. Most actors struggle with this to some extent, but Ridley just doesn't even try.

She had a lot of ">I'm acting!" in the Star Wars movies, but I think that's just because those movies were so dogshit and they had her screaming and crying almost all the time, usually covered in dirt or sand and covered in toilet paper costumes. She could have been something really great with a better plot, although I still liked her scenes the most. Rey and Kylo were the only good parts about those movies. Finn was a sleeper and Poe was normally pretty boring despite him being a good actor.
