When the books first came out I posted on some fan forums and there was a theory that in recent times he was controlling the Mad Kings such as Dany's father, hence he wanted to burn everything. When Arya saves the faceless man, she saves him from burning alive, and he revered to that as a sacrifice to a "fire God".
