With all the free time the US education system has (no foreign languages required, not a lot of history to cover), you'd think we'd have more of a grasp of European history, but in general people get a very sparse overview of the Napoleonic wars. I'd consider it a huge success if all people recall from high school is the chain of events: French Revolution -> Emperor Napoleon -> invade Russia in winter -> Europe basically back to what it was before.
But generally people remember Napoleon because media commentators will reference him from time to time as the guy who invaded Russia and lost it all. And maybe in a more cerebral instance they'll cite him as the dictatorial result of a failed revolution.
