No, you don't understand. Literal white collar people in China don't know how to write basic words like "thumb" or "shed". That's in addition to their illiterate population. In the West people at best have trouble not knowing how to properly spell a more complex word, but not basic everyday ones.

Because they have like hundreds of words that all sound the same but have different meanings. At least with unique characters you can know the meaning, with Latin alphabet that would be impossible.

It's unironically more efficient for the Chinese language. Other languages would have issues if you used a character for every piece of semantic of information but it works well for Chinese.

I saw a video on it where a guy would go up to chinese mainlanders and ask them to write basic words, practically all of them couldn't (one of them was "thumb"). I don't remember the name but a quick search should yield results rather promptly

I think I know what you mean.
A lot of those words are literally 1 symbols. Meaning they're not used elsewhere.
For example, you have things like tooth floss, tooth pick, tooth, tooth brush, etc.
For some rare Chinese words, there's only 1 symbol for that 1 word and it's not used anywhere else.

You can write Chinese using the Latin alphabet, pic related. Actually the accents above each letter are unnecessary because you can intuitively figure out what accent/tone the words are gonna be in. Although it's probably gonna take you years to get on that level.

I was the only ABC, my coworkers were all born in China, so we all spoke Chinese face to face; their English was pretty bad. And they were already using Chinese in the chat system before I was hired, so I just did what they did.
Part of the reason I was so diligent at learning Chinese is that I hate hearing Chinese people speak English. It sounds like dog shit, so I decided from an early age to just be better at Chinese so I'd never have to hear that shit again.

characterers allow speakers from the different chinese languages to still understand written language when they go to a region with a different language e. g. north to south.

except for the 10% of cases where there's multiple candidates or rare terms. and also when local slang/dialects come into the picture
yeah just don't write one quarter of the spoken characters to make southern languages understandable to northoids, perfectly reasonable
