The controls between the US and Canada are not very tight. You didn’t even need a passport until 9/11. Now you do need to go through a border station where they check your passport, and maybe they quiz you about where you’re going, where you’re from, etc if they think you’re an illegal migration risk, but the delay usually isn’t very significant. Sometimes if there’s a long weekend or something where there’s a lot of travellers at once then there’s a long line that might take a little longer, like half an hour. Otherwise it’s just a minute or two.

French is one of the easiest languages for Anglophones to learn. The two languages are really similar. Obviously you need to learn the grammar and stuff, but a funny trick that doesn’t always work, but seems to work more often than not, is to just say a word from one language in the accent of the other, and you can make yourself understood lol

I wouldn't advise going to large cities because they are very stressful. I live in a city of 250,000+ people and visited savannah georgia and it was still stressful despite being 1/2 the population. I live in the south east and despite it being kind of a shithole, the people try to be nice or feign it well.

There's a lot of potential destinations, depending on what interests you. NYC is pricey and can be a little overwhelming though.
