The most famous one is Oda Nobunaga and Ranmaru Mori. It was a way of securing an alliance similar to a marriage alliance without resorting to polygamy.

It wasn't merely political but it had a political element to it in certain contexts. No one's saying that Roman's weren't fucking their boy slaves for fun but over different cultures and places it has undergone different interpretations.
