>i autistically focus on surnames and like identifying local variations of them using forebears.io. helps me research diasporas too, including those with little to no information online (gagauz brazilians)
have been doing almost the same since i discovered that site here.
in sydney, there are people from everywhere so as soon as I get someone's last name (or if it's a very uncommon firstname) I'll type it up there and see where they're from. If I haven't asked where they're from by then it provides for shockingly accurate guessing which always surprises people.
I have learned so much from that site it's unbelievable
