for all practical purposes, its the same language. the pronounciation is a bit different and they have quite a few unique words, such as "obers" instead of "sahne". as a german speaker you will generally recognise austrians by their speech, unless they try to hide their origin by speaking standard german. you will also generally be able to understand them, unless they are able to switch into the heavy dialect of old rural people.
