Independence thread

Why can't countries achieve to get their independence anymore? What needs to be done? What is the secret recipe to win a referendum or start a revolution?

Globalization.

There is only one single post-WW2 example where a state declared independence unilaterally and succeeded and that's Green Japan which worked because of some weird Cold War constellation were it was supported by both the US and the SU.

So you can only succeed with the endorsement of the parent state because states are just allergic to losing territory.

Because few nations would actually benefit from leaving the larger country they’re a part of

Maybe economically they wouldn't benefit, but culturally yes.
