I live in a 10k population town and it's surprisingly getting better with every year. Stores are opening, roads and sidewalks are rebuilt, monuments and historical sites are getting renovated. Although it's getting slower these times, they can't finish the local park and fortress for like two or three years already.

Rural small towns are dying, but suburban small towns near cities are booming.

Small towns are where rich people who own the city center cluster.
And they have a more active political life. While urbanites are basically cattle or agents pushing an agenda.

The small towns far far from important cities are something else. They are more fit for traditional life than modern life, but their inhabitants dont understand that and whine without anybody giving a fuck about them.
