There are two ways of drinking it, cold or warm, in Brazil we call the cold one tereré and the warm one chimarrão, in other countries I think they call it tereré and mate respectively. The herb for the warm drink is thinner and for the cold drink is thicker. To make both you just put the herb in the cup leveling a “hole”, you insert the filter and just put water through the hole, that’s how I do it.
