The most absurd is Greenland. It appears x4 the size of India. I always found it bullshit even before I knew about different map projections

Until the 1500s or so sailors used basic charts for navigating bodies of water, mainly the Mediterranean, but when they found America and the distances became much greater they realized that the maps drawn in scale don't work because of the curvature of the Earth. If you try to draw a straight line on a globe you'll eventually end up on one of the poles, and if you're a guy trying to sail to America from Europe using these maps that's obviously a problem since you won't be able to get where you're trying to go.
So Mercator came up with a new kind of map that allows sailors to plot a course that takes them where they're going. All it takes is distorting the map as you're getting increasingly closer to the poles, and representing the Earth that way just kind of stuck because it was such a practical solution.
