Look at every large empire, Spain, Britain, America, Portugal, etc. Tbf Spain and Portugal didn't leverage their empires as well but they're still way better off today.

There is a difference between being invaded and being invaded by nazis whose sole goal was to exterminate your entire population.
Also the war wasn't that long ago and affected every single family. Combine that with the "cult of victory", and you get a nation that is obsessed with military power, because that power associated with staying alive.
