Iirc here in Rio, not long after the republic was stablished, they destroyed the poor neighborhoods inside the major urban areas to make them prettier, so all the poor people(wich were mostly former slaves) had to move to the neighboring areas, and thats how most favelas were born here
After slavery ended, the Republicans treated the blacks like shit, they didn't do anything to help them stablish themselves in society and like this wasnt enough, in Rio the government destroyed the poor neighborhoods where the ex-slaves (and other poor people) lived. That's how the favelas happened.
