竹を使ってかごを作る。 -te form links the sentences together. "(he's) using bamboo, and (he) makes a cage." I.E. "He makes a cage using bamboo." If you used -u form you'd get "(he) makes a bamboo-using cage." where the whole subsentence describes the cage.
Same thing with 走って駅に行く "I run and am going to station -> I'm running to the station" vs 走る駅に行く "I'm going to a running station." and other sentences like that.
