Neither was being a Turkish vassal the worst option for Serbia, at least their culture was influenced by Turkish great cuisine, music, fashion etc so nowadays "Balkan culture" is something seen very positively in Europe. Meanwhile not a single valuable thing came here from Russia, pretty much everything is associated negatively.

The Turks were pretty bad for us because they ruled us in the most critical period (the early modern age) and stymied our cultural and economix growth through the implementation of retarded policies (e.g. banning the printing press). You only have to take a look at Dubrovnik to see an example of a (roughly) independent South Slavic country that didn't experience Ottoman rule to know that the Turks had no idea how to govern their provinces. We already received all the good stuff from the Byzantines. Of course, you won't hear anybody complain about Turks here because that's a very 19th century thing to do, unless somebody asks about the early modern history of Serbia.

It's like Americans about blacks, they will always bring this issue into every discussion.

You would get more positive attention from an American if you called yourself an Austrian (in the national sense) than if you called yourself a Serb (in the ethnic sense). Some European countries naturally elicit a positive response whenever their name is spoken, sadly my country is not one of those

Dude, I'm not saying that Turks were wonderful to you but as you admitted, their 'fault' was just being a stagnant economy. Meanwhile Russians actively tried to destroy our nation by killing almost everyone who was educated and patriotic. I don't think Turks had an equivalent of Siberia or Gulag.

that's because you're associated with the Albanian/Bosnian genocide, not because someone doesn't like the Balkan culture. It's only about being Serb, Croatians or Greeks are universally liked (except their neighbors but it's normal everywhere).

I don't know enough about Ottoman history to tell you how they punished dissidents, but what I can tell you is that the First Serbian Uprising started precisely because the Serbs felt the Turks were stiffling their self-expression too much. The Greeks also started to rebel because of this reason.

There is a great difference between punishing people for active resistance against the government and just genociding people who were simply educated or a bit richer than average.

What? Croatia is amazing. I went to visit after the world cup and fell in love with the people and culture. It is a clean, safe country filled with wonderfully outgoing and vivacious people. I wanted to make a return trip but Corona happened.
