You don't understand the situation. I have a few relatives like that. They know there are alternatives, but they grew up watching Rossija 24 and they will die watching it. The other media exists, but why would they switch to it when what they have now provides fair reporting (in their eyes)? And the other media we have is either local or western. Western media is immediately out of the question- they have always been an enemy, it's propaganda. With local media it's a bit difficult because there is some cognitive dissonance going where they only selectively trust what they see- a huge car crash in Riga? That's horrible, I must avoid that street. A huge car crash in Moscow? No way to tell if that's true, could be making russia look bad on purpose. I don't mean it in a demeaning way, but unless you met those people, you do not understand how they work. They're completely zombified. And they may be nice, rational people, like my grandparents, I love them dearly, but as soon as politics get brought up (and they will be brought up eventually), I hear stuff that could come out of fairy tales.

Russian propaganda is an example of outdated, obvious strategies with limited utility in the modern day. They explicitly limit it to only state backed entities and the media basically tells you how to think.
In the West, it's more sophisticated. They give you (((choices))) which are all in some kind of agreement as to what they're going to let you hear or bicker about, they selectively release news that guides you to the proper conclusion.
