I'm Chinese so I'll tell you the truth. Asian males are even liked as lead actors in Asia. Maybe in Japan but in Korea and Chinese, a Hapa or a Blonde White male with blue eyes is prefered.
For example in China the highest grossing movie of this year just came out. It's called Turandot: The Curse Of the Turando
Surprise Surprise it's a JBW movie where a Blonde Blue Eyed actor from America plays a historically Chinese character, he beats up the evil Chinese Asian guys then gets fucks a Chinese princess.
Not only that but it got record breaking reviews. Even though it was horrible.
China is always looking for blonde blue eyed male leads nowadays. 2 other movies are being produced with JBW actors staring as the main characters

In the early 1900s there were actually some films depicting asian men in a very macho romantic manner. This shifted in 1940s when America needed to start producing anti-japanese propaganda. Then you have the added benefit of white directors purposefully trying to pedestal themselves as amazing in media.
Luckily for you kpop has gone massive so its not that terrible. Next coming years you'll see better representation because more people are aware of these sorts of things.
