People excuse mothers who abandon their children by pointing to specific outcomes where the child turned out well (e.g., if a wealthy first-world family adopted the child).
The reality is that these best-case outcomes occur very infrequently.
Child abandonment, especially social abandonment (the child is abandoned yet has at least one living parent), is an international issue.
