taiwan has a bit of an identity problem. Their people aren't really sure as to who they are. Should they embrace being native Taiwanese? they have almost no history of being an established independent country prior to the Nationalist regime, so not really. Should they be Chinese? that obviously makes some eyebrows raise and adds complications. So they look elsewhere as to ways they can express who they are, which is why Taiwan is full of queers nowadays
