I think we are interpretting the story wrong, I think Valmiki trying to make some of the characters morally grey to create nuance and to teach that sometimes we are forced to side with the lesser of two evils but because of religious fervor everyone interprets every single characters in the established "good" side to be pure bastions of morality, which takes away from the quality of the story
