Most of the Taiwanese population really thinks America will go to war with the PRC to protect them. I have many Taiwanese friends who have literally zero intention of staying to defend the island if the mainland invades. Like they literally have plans to fly out if that happens and just come back after the dust clears.

It's fucking over if China invades. Just in 2021 alone, the PLAN launched more warships than the UK currently has in active operation.

Now ask yourself how much of the entire US navy will be pulled from other zones of operation to defend Taiwan. My guess is even just the 7th fleet will hover around the SCS and basically do nothing when China invades.

Last year alone it launched 2 LHDs, 3 cruisers, 7 destroyers, 9 frigates, 1 sub and a partridge in a pear tree. I would love to see a real USN vs PLAN naval engagement in my lifetime but it unfortunately won't happen.
