they do yes. the train systems are far worse outside of london, because they aren't really a subway system but a system of local trains that aren't very expansive in where they cover and are far less frequent.

yeah plenty of cities outside london use trains for transport but like said, the most cities like Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, and Leeds just use heavy rail for commuters.
Glasgow has a subway, Merseyside has a dedicated heavy rail system, and Newcastle has a light rail system. The Glasgow Subway is entirely underground, and Merseyrail and NEXUS use a combination of both underground and above ground stations. A number of places like Sheffield and Nottingham also have tram networks.
During the 60's, 55% of stations were closed and 33% of lines were closed too. A number of these lines have either been converted to tram operations such as around Manchester and the West Midlands, and some of these lines will eventually be reopened.
We have the potential to have a very good rail system in the UK, we just have idiots making the decisions
