At least in Norway, all PhD students are employed by the university for 3 years and have to do a little bit of teaching on the side.

The system in the States is better because you don’t two third of your salaries stolen in taxes and so called «social contributions». I mean if you study something useful in the States like STEM then student debt is not a problem at all. I’d unironically take out loans for tuitions if I were eligible because it’s extremely easy to pay off with a six figure salary.
Meanwhile everything is subsidized here including useless social studies stuff. Basically instead of just paying for your own tuitions, you pay for everyone else’s with taxes. It’s not fucking «free»

Yeah, it's called "insurance" instead.
Also, France is quite unique in its insane taxation. Not all of Europe or the world has French taxes.

If you do a PhD here you are paid either directly by the department/university for doing research and sometimes teaching assistantships, or through a fellowship. Tuition is also waived, all you have to pay is some small administrative fees. You wont be well off with this money but you can get an apartment or rent a house and have money for whatever necessary. This is for STEM programs in decent universities at least, i think for humanities and other shit it is hard to get pais like that.
