Southern Italy has been backwards for centuries and after the unification the governments favoured the industrialisation of the North because it was already a more favourable environment for investments and infrastructure.
Now nobody wants to invest billions in the South because everyone believes that criminal infiltration is inevitable.

Lots of people working under the table. Also the South has a lot of corruption.

Food grows in the middle and North too. It's not like the North is all mountains - there's lots of hills and valleys. When I visited a small town in Piedmont, I saw lots of little agro-tourism businesses and vineyards.

I've been to italy. Literally nothing works. Theres rubbish on teh street, bins overflowing. Businesses offer something on a sign out the front and you ask for that and the guy behind the counter says that he can't remember how so he's not doing it
there are thieves everywhere and nobody does anything because they have so beaurcracy where they can only be arrested for 1 day and have to be released
it is a broken society

We used to have most of these problems even back when we were rich and growing. The bureaucracy in France isn't much better either.
That's just part of the problem.

I literally don't care if the italian economy is fucked up, they are a privileged EU nation and that is enough for me to pursue the citizenship and move there
