The economics of it is solid. There are a ton of people lining up to ride Brightline, the NEC, and other HSR routes. It's just that the people along the route block construction and make every project ridiculously expensive and time consuming.

Look changbalangabingbang, every state, county and municipality has the authority to do what they want in their own juridiction. If they want public transportation that's their call. I live in a city with medium density, and a large number of nigs, so we have a relatively useable public transport system. Making one that is as efficient and extensive as in Europe and Asia entails ending single family detached homes and suburban development and building apartment blocks to live like bugs. Traffic is shit and rage inducing, but nobody is interested in the former. We have plenty of suburbs from before the war, much more organic than planned development tracts, and those are also not suitable. Entire cities would need to get torn down and rebuilt to accomodate buses and trains. Do you ask such inane and leading questions like why don't brits, indians and chinese build detached housing and two cars?

Public transport in America is probably not economically viable because of low population density of their cities. Due to white flight urban residential areas have died out and Americans have spread out to the suburbs.
