It's a lot more complicated than this.
The idea that Baptist christianity was forced on slaves was true, and this happened relatively recently. By contrast, Islam reach West African centuries before the slave trade started. A lot of west African kingdoms became Muslim as early as the 14th century through trade with arabs and so the identities of some Africans were already muslim to begin with. In fact, 30% of slaves from West Africa were muslim, and they were actually very literate for the time period. As a result, a lot of them were placed into supervisory or overseers roles as opposed to the tribal non muslim slaves.
The nation of islam became a big and popular force among blacks in America and most of the blacks who were apart of this movement ended up adopting muslim names, to identify with their "ancestors"
