Yes. Zhao Ziyang getting couped 1989 was, in hindsight, the worst geopolitical disaster of the Cold War. China was this close to getting their own Gorbachev.
Hu Jintao was a close second. Pooh undid everything they worked for.
The Chinese people deserve freedom. Instead they're being led to ruin.

>China was this close to getting their own Gorbachev
Considering how Gorbachev destroyed the USSR and is responsible for the misery of the Russian people today, China must feel incredibly lucky Chinese Gorbachev was buried 6 feet under by Deng Xiaoping.
Go ask Russians how they feel about Gorbachev, it's not pretty

>the worst geopolitical disaster of the Cold War
this is how Putin (greatest Russian leader of the modern era) refers to the collapse of the USSR btw

the anglo eternally fears being outdone.

times over, tick tock

>Putin (greatest Russian leader of the modern era)

Imagine facing the same geopolitical challenges your ancestors encountered, and instead of thinking with modern solutions, you instead just LARP as a soviet and further send your country to the brink.

He looks like an incel but he's tall as fuck and has a cute daughter.

No one has played better given their hand than Putin. He is by far the most clever leader of the 21st century, and is the decisive factor why Russia is Russia today and not "Nigeria with snow". The beginning of 2022 should have erased any doubts that Russia plays at the same level as China and USA and the USA cannot just ignore Russia and go after China like it wished to.

>Go ask Russians how they feel about Gorbachev, it's not pretty
They're fed lies about the "glory" of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev didn't handle everything perfectly, but he and Yeltsin had every opportunity to integrate Russia into the global community. Maybe they could've succeeded, too, if Putin didn't fuck everything up. Everything that's happened in Russia over the last 20 years has been on Putin and his bootlickers.

Yes, it would've hurt no matter what at first, but they would've made a recovery. Poland, the Baltics, East Germany, Slovenia and Croatia suffered for a few years then recovered rapidly after they were integrated into the western economy.

He's a KGB man and I referenced that quote deliberately. The fall of the USSR was a great thing and for the first time ever, the people of Eastern Europe had a voice. They were free. If only it'd lasted.

None of that was guaranteed to happen with China. There was a burgeoning democracy movement in the 1980s. I don't know if you're aware how enamored the average Chinese was with American culture in the 80s. American music, American literature, American movies, American goods and American values swept the nation. It was a mirror image of the Eastern Bloc in the same time period.

Things would be different if a democratic China and Russia existed today. No new cold war. A free Tibet. A China that got along with its neighbors. Fukuyama would've been correct if only the PRC had fallen alongside the Soviet Union.
