Viable is a codeword for exploitable. Nations used to make difficult decisions that would put a minority of their population in peril, but because of democracy that is no longer the case. The French could increase the workload of the individual to make up for the shortage of labor, so no more long holiday and employee protections. Environmental restrictions could also be lifted and closer ties with America, Russia and China achieved in order to gain foreign investment that isn't tied to receiving refugees. Basically any economic incentive towards capitalism and away from socialism would improve their position if they wanted to offset loss of cheap labor. Make unionizing and labor protests illegal, incentivize starting multi-child families, and, most importantly, shift the current tax funding being used to house/help/imprison/enable refugees into the pensions of the French (defined as those born in France prior to 1960 or whenever retirement is over there). Obviously without numeric data its all bullshit but that's how they could potentially do it, but they won't because again, comfort and democracy is more important than identity.
