Well you also have to remember that back in those days the actual size of north america was truely unknown. Spain really dropped tbe ball managing it's colonies. The colonial system Spain brought to central and South America still exist to this very day. The reason Mexico lost control of Texas and northern Mexico was largely due to how remote and barren it really is. Another factor was the Navajo.
