Are there any iterations where he's particularly good at using his skills as a journalist to investigate/solve threats? (just as much if not moreso than as Superman, if that makes sense)

Not that I'm aware of, just like there aren't any iterations where Bruce is particularly good at using his resources and influence to investigate/solve threats that cannot be solved by punching.

It doesn't make much sense because a superman level threat won't be stopped by a scathing critique in the Sunday paper. People like Morgan Edge and Lex Luthor are not really afraid of one reporter no matter how good their are.

"The Late Mr. Kent" from STAS comes to mind.

There was a bunch of stories in 80's/90's Action Comics where Clark would just be doing investigative reporter stuff not necessarily for Superman adventures. I think when he lost his powers for a time he took on Intergang as Clark and had to use his martial arts more obviously.

Then why are their countless stories where Lois and/or Clark are targeted for this very reason because they are in the process of publishing a scathing article?

Bruce has used Wayne Corp/Tech countless times for leverage to smoke out criminals and suspects. Maybe it's not useful tactics for guys like the Joker but even when Bruce wants to flush out R'as/Talia he uses corporate shenanigans all the time. So yes having his former father's company is proven useful than just putting on batpajamas and beating up muggers in alleys.

was that the episode where superman gets a dude a death sentence and he figures it out right when he's about to get gassed?

good episode if so

WOW SPOILER ALERT!!!
You just fucking ruined the episode for people who have not seen it yet.

the shows 26 years old

Because this is a common 20th century trope that's growing less relevant everyday.

but I was born yesterday

Funny enough Clark "wrote" a fictionalized novel, Under a Yellow Sun, where a stand-in character is investigating a crime while pointing out how shitty the world is to him.

He could take on bigger villains as a journalist, the kind that are entrenched in society too deeply for force to be sensible. Superman's whole thing is struggling with big moral issues that can't be punched to death, it'd be neat to see Clark Kent save the day where Superman wouldnt dare intervene. A good journalist that moves the public conversation can do enormous things.

Original Superman was great, he would get an assignment, go investigate something else entirely, turn into Superman and stop it, then be like “sorry, Perry, no story here,” with that wry smile and Lois would thought balloon “what is up with Clark, how does he keep his job when he never turns in stories?” It was glorious.

Growing less relevant? Look at Julian Assange or Edward Snowden, it's still very relevant.

Supes does have to do investigative work on occasion. He may be immune to bullets but he's still gotta find the bad guys first. Not only is a reporter's skillset useful for that, but he can gain access to relevant places and information without arousing suspicion just by saying he's a reporter doing a piece on them.

As for Clark, he was/is an investigative journalist at a time when that actually meant something. He does the same kind of shit that Lois does, investigate shady politicians, uncover illegal/unethical business practices, publish exposes etc. He's just more lowkey about it and doesn't get into as much trouble. I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned a few times that Clark even has a Pulitzer or something equivalent. He's probably a legit good reporter too since Superman hax only get you so far in a job that requires you to have hard, traceable, legally obtained evidence to back up what you're saying. Clark Kent may not be well know to the public, but I bet he's decently well respected in his field.

This also kind of makes Lois even more impressive by comparison. Clark has actual superpowers and she's still usually depicted as a better reporter than him, or at least equally good at her job.

Yes, as we all know every young person must have seen everything ever created before they were born....
The Show/movie/book is old is the lamest excuse people use.
It is still spoiler my man.

Honestly a competent reporter with a large audience and a reputation for honesty is probably more dangerous to Lex Luthor than Superman on the average day. Superman can topple a scheme but Lex is careful and smart enough that Superman usually can't go after him publicly for it due to lack of proof. But a reporter who starts tugging the thread on one of his more mundane shady dealings could start finding the rest. And they'll most likely have friends and colleges-who are also reporters-that would notice if he "dissapeared" while investigating a LexCorp subsidiary. If the reporter gets enough proof to publish Lex takes a huge hit to his rep and PR, which are basically the only things keeping him protected. Lex of all people should know not to underestimate how much one individual with a large platform and good reputation can sway public opinion.

Yeah there was a storyline in which Clark has to track Lana Ross/Lang (who is the wife of vice president Peter Ross). But he cannot do it as Superman so he won't draw attention to this town.

There is another overarching story during President Luthor's admin where Perry White stages his firing so Clark gets whatever dirt he can to get Luthor impeached.

Another one I like is All Star Superman where Clark writes his story on Luthor before Luthor's death sentence is carried out.

There's a lot. Clark is a legit good journalist but if that's not your thing he was also a TV reporter for GCN(?)

In the original comics it felt like he was a reporter so he could get scoops on crimes as they were happening so he could go save the day, which doesn't make too much sense
