I have started to find rape as a story point to be lacking.

Rape can be a powerful story device if you really mean it. I’d you’re just treating it like it’s interchangeable with torture or gore, then don’t even bother, just use torture or gore. The Evil That Men Do may be awkward in spots, but it’s specifically about the effect rape has on the victim psychologically and isn’t just thrown in for tension.
