Writing? Sure, he can write some good dialogue and has some interesting/charming ideas. See the part in An Evening with Kevin Smith where he details a hypothetical Superman plot.
Directing? Fuck no. Even he himself admits he’s actually horrible at actual filmmaking and can barely block a scene.
If he ever does get an opportunity like that, I hope his ego doesn’t precede him and he’s thankfully relegated to just being the screenwriter or the ideas guy and an actually talented director puts the actual images on screen.
Honestly, if was born later, he’d have just been a podcaster instead of trying to direct movies, because his conversational charm and ability to come up with ideas (not execute them) is really his selling point.
