Easy answer is that it was just lazy furry waifu bait, the more complicated reason is that while that could still sell as a show 'girl goes on magical misadventures' is actually a pretty common type of show to already have in the production pipeline.

I get the sense that if it did get a series I would take it for granted or resent the newfound audience of dieheards after simping over the pilot for so long. I might just have to unlearn my contrarian ways, I was a big oneyplays fan and really wanted Smiling Friends to get made but when the season actually dropped the relentless hype around it turned me off
