When he mentioned 9/11, he had brought it up because he was trying to set the image of how 2002 was in the context of the vibe of the time was (this also works into fashion sense and how the movie felt more like a 1998-1999 period piece than a early 2000s one where colors were more muted and the edgy era was starting to take off)
