Why do nerds hate 1998-2007 Simpsons so much? Maybe it wasn't as emotional as 1989-1997 Simpsons, but at least it was still funny, unlike 2008-2022 Simpsons.

Classic Simpsons set the bar too high. I think if 2000s Simpson existed as a unique entity where the old show never existed people would like it more.

Growing up I actually preferred the Scully/early Jean era because I was an edgy kid. Whenever something like a season 1 rerun came on I groaned because I didn't like the schmaltzy "life lessons" played straight.

Then I got older and read the Nohomers club, and started to hate the Scully era for being too wacky and prefer the classic episodes.

Now I tend to appreciate both as different styles of television.

They viewed as a serialized down-to-earth sitcom instead of an episodic cartoon

It seemed strange to me how some designs of new characters (either background or one-offs) during that era had more defined "realistic" details.
Pic related may be the biggest offender with how defined their muscles are next to someone like Marge or Milhouse's mom who in comparison have more tubier limbs. Their faces wouldn't be so odd too if they looked a little bit more like Laura Power's
And this goes to men too. John in Homer's phobia and Mel Gibson tick some boxes beyond the usual guest star faces,

Jokes were still consistently good. The problem was that the quality of storytelling took a major dip. First decade of The Simpsons were well plotted and held real emotional stakes. The 2nd decade lacked any real sense of story. The elf jockeys are a good example. Maybe it's funny, but it's a total plot non sequitur and sucks any real stakes out of the story. This comes at a time when more and more adult animated sitcoms are entering the scene and telling better stories. King of the Hill being the best example.

I love that era, bush years are the most edgy years for the simpsons. you even got bart beating up tranny lenny

Simpsons storytelling has never been consistent. Good jokes but the plots have a lot of continuity errors and are formulaic and this happened in the ''golden'' era, some episodes were different, but most followed a formula.

eh, the internal continuity of each episode was good though. And while they could be formulaic, that formula could lead to really effective story moments. Like, the monorail episode is a classic, formulaic story, but it's an all time classic.

As I said, some episodes were different from others and could escape the formula. but most were pretty formulaic, on rewatching I started to dislike some of their habits.

It feels weird looking back at that era and how the Simpsons barely mocked Bush at all. Maybe once or twice with the Patriot Act parody in Bart-Mangled Banner, but otherwise zilch. Compare that to Family Guy which was taking shots at Bush every week. I don't know if the Simpsons writers feared Bush more than Seth did.

Dial N for Nerder was the episode I stopped watching new episodes of the show. It was so boring and unfunny, I only over watched it once and remember the title off the top of my head to this day. I never got that from almost any other episode.

Fandom isn't monolithic

holy shit this show's been airing since 10 years before I was born? end it already!

HD era has no fans, you have episodes that are praised like barthood, but when people say modern simpsons, they're talking about the HD season

I hate the antichrist

simpsons is only good for lisamania now
the yellow semen demon will rule supreme

There were duds of episodes like Principal and the Pauper, but they were duds relative to the previous seasons. Principal and the Pauper looks like a well-written episode compared to post-Movie Simpsons. The Usenet nerds back then didn't know how good they had it.

...

I liked 97-07 Simpsons as well. I think it was given a bum rep because of second episode of Season 9 which led a lot of people to stop watching the series, with some already more focused on watching Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, among other Fox animated series.
