What is the story behind all this Samus and cortana stuff? This is match I have literally never heated before and I think that is for good reason since one is a fucking disembodied ai.
Fake news desu. OG Metroid is an old game, and used archaic enemy designs and mechanics from the NES that carried over from the generations, where so much as bumping into you would cause you to take damage.
Metroid's lore and who and what Samus is capable of outside gameplay limitations only really came out post Super Metroid and even back then they were quick to throw out some wild info like her rush being supersonic. In the Manga, even her basic power suit was invulnerable to basic pirate infantry weapon (to say, it even reflected the blasts), and Ridley's room clearing, feet thick metal wall shattering plasma breath-beam does virtually no damage to her Varia suit. Yet in all games to come she's hurt but anything that is or comes from an enemy. Why? Likely to keep the game a functional game. Remember, the game came before the lore.
It's also very important to note, that in Metroid Fusion, the SA-X, a perfect clone of Samus' armor at "full power", is unharmed by nearly everything in the game, and they go as far to make this a plot point, being mentioned to you multiple times by AI-Adam.
Only the Charge+wave+wide+plasma* beam and screw attack** can harm the SA-X, and even then it takes near 20+ hits to down it with. I would also mention she asborbed the SA-X and seemingly became more durable than anything in the past but that point isn't without it's own logic/retcon flaws and has no part of this thread since that is post Other M. the SA-X being virtually immune to damage is relevant since it's copying what would be the Super Metroid and Other M versions of Samus' armor.
