>Except slashfic
>Even when it's canon

Still waiting on you to show me these ILLEGAL FANFICS, user

They aren't just detrimental to art, intellectual property is one of the single most destructive concepts ever imposed upon humanity

Hasbro took down a mlp fighting game and other projects, GW took down several Warhammer40k videos on youtube
Fanfiction.net will take down and ban any fanfiction from any company that request it, they have a list of banned franchises

Most authors allow fanfiction because is free shilling and taking it down usually lead to fans getting upset.

There are plenty.

>Fanfics shouldn't be illegal.
They aren't. Takedown bullshit and what the law actually permits are so far apart it's not even close.

Speedy

Yeah let's destroy everything that was inspiered by public domain.
This. We should go back to 14 years. Or even maybe 5 in case of corporations.

Public domain has lead to the greatest works of all time. Things should be public domain.

Reasonable lengths on copyright are fine - 20 years with a 10 year extension option is enough time to make your money back, and even allow for a work to experience a nostalgic 'second wind'. The problem is purely how copyright has been abused and allows companies to maintain a stranglehold on properties for roughly the lifespan of a human being.

This

>FanFiction.Net instituted several policy changes as it grew in size and popularity.[15] These policies frequently led to the deletion of fan fiction based on the copyrighted works of certain published authors or containing specifically targeted content.

>Since the site's founding, several professional authors and producers have asked that stories based on their copyrighted or trademarked works be removed, including Anne Rice, P. N. Elrod, Archie Comics, Dennis L. McKiernan, Irene Radford, J.R. Ward, Laurell K. Hamilton, Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb, Raymond Feist, Robin Hobb, Robin McKinley, and Terry Goodkind.[16]

>In addition, stories based on real-life celebrities were disallowed around 2003. Fan fiction based on professional wrestling, however, is still allowed, being the number one fandom in the "Miscellaneous" category.[16]

Murder shouldn't be illegal either but we live in a fucked-up world.

Candace enters very starstruck by the heroes and asks them to read her fan-fiction, to which Spider-Man refuses since they are not allowed to accept unsolicited material

I can't tell if this is serious or not.

You should apply this logic to everything. You open a shop and only get to keep it for 20 years, build a farm only get to keep it for 20 years. Want to pass it down to your kids? Go fuck yourself, you know what you can only keep your money for 20 years, that's enough time to spend it.

so... fanfics are illegal?

That's the website moderating itself. It's not saying that content is illegal. Parodies and transformative works are protected by law but a website can make it so that content can't be posted on their site. Even porn websites have DNP (do not post) lists of subjects that aren't allowed. However, if an IP holder wants to they can sue someone over a fanfic, even if that person isn't breaking any laws. It's just that 99.9% of the time, they don't want to draw attention to it. Large companies would only do it knowing they can get away with it because of legal fees for those trying to fight it in court. It's shit but it gets abused from time to time. It's also why you hear about youtube content creators dealing with DMCA takedown notices even though they likely haven't broke any laws or rules.
