90s Comics

Did the 90s have better character design?

Sometimes yes. Sometime no. Pic related is nice. Can't put my finger on it, though.

I like this colouring style
Anyone know how could I imitate it?

ngl the thumbnail made me think it was bugs bunny in drag

The thing is, regardless of whether or not they were better or worse, comics in the 90s where TRYING to be cool. Some hulking brute covered in spikes and claws might look ridiculous. It might look idiotic. But it was TRYING to be cool. An dI think that attempt went a long way to at least make them more memorable even when they were dumb as hell.

It pretty much boils down to Joe Madureira having great style that still holds up.

90s comics were all about trying to be cool, badass or sexy, 00s comics were all about trying to be edgy, serious and realistic, modern comics are all about trying to be inclusive, representative, and inoffensive. You can understand why older comics appealed to kids and teens more. You'd rather read something that seemed dangerous and transgressive, something your parents wouldn't want you to read, while a lot of modern comics look more like something you'd be forced to read at school.

Depends on the artist, I hate the overly detailed shit of the era but simple but still detailed stuff is really nice.

Character design is irrelevant when the art is horrible.

I used to love drawing Joe Mad characters when I was starting out way back when. A few of my OCs have giant gloves because of him. Not to mention his 90's comics style babes were MINT.

lol more than 20 years later and I still keep stealing from him.

It's just astounding how dull stuff has gotten. You look at some crazy 90s image schlock and it's dumb. The characters have absurd proportions, they carry around retardedly huge weapons. None of the poses or outfits make any sense. But there's just an energy to it. Even the worst trash would look like a page of action exploding in front of you. It was exciting. It felt new. Now stuff is boring. It's safe. The colors and outfits are realistic and tasteful but they're also drab. Stories are less about off the hook action, explosions and danger. It's characters cracking wise while getting starbucks.
